Photo Collection Statistics

This is a fun, side-ways look at the collection - some statistics for amusement... Some of these are fixed (i.e. permanent info about the collection), others might change based on searches on this website... If you have any thoughts for other stats we could share, do let us know...

 

Largest glass plate negative:
12'x16' = 192 square inches.
The average DSLR (digital SLR) has a sensor of roughly 2/3 x 1 inch or 2/3 sq inch in area which makes the plate over 287 times bigger in area

Smallest glass plate negative:
3'x5' = 15 square inches still 10 times bigger than the average DSLR!

Oldest photo:
There are photos of Bosworth-Smith baby listed as 1866 making the photos 143 years old - wow!

Youngest photo:
Estimated to be 1970 based on the index where Draper C G is recorded as head of school in 1970. That makes the youngest photo 39 years old in 2009.

    New scanner here - have scanned first 10x12 inch plates - they take a long time! but great to start the slow process of adding these photos

    Looking at scanners, upgraded to a new A3 glass plate scanner - should make it easy to scan, old scanner had died, new one comes soon.
